Are you a Carrot, Egg, or Coffee???
Leaders… Are you Carrots, Eggs, or Coffee???
The other day I was reading a book call “ Eating a Elephant One Bite At a Time:52 Weekly Lessons in Leadership” by Brian Klemmer. Brian is an inspiring leader. A person that is making a difference in peoples lives around the world. The book is very challenging, but something caught my attention… right in the first chapter.
“ Leaders change the situation instead of being changed by the situation”
That’s a very powerful statement. Think about it. Are we people who change the situation? or are we being influenced and changed by the situation? In the last 12 weeks we have had so many personal challenges to overcome and I am personally very challenged by this statement.
Brian goes on to….
What are we most like: a carrot, an egg or coffee? All three I enjoy.
Carrot… starts out firm but when placed in boiling water it becomes limp
An egg….. starts out with a hard shell and soft in the middle, place in boiling water and the insides become hard.
Coffee… place it in boiling water and it changes the water completely !!
Have a think about this analogy. We all have challenges we face everyday and where we can observe our behaviour as it’s a good indicator that we need to work on ourselves.
If we are like carrots, we act tough enough but when challenges of life come we soften and we wilt and are unable to stand up for ourselves anymore !!!
If we are like an egg, as we confront challenges we get hard on the inside, we can become calloused, even bitter and are unable or unwilling to allow ourselves to feel and connect with people. !!!
TRUE LEADERS are like coffee. When put into a situation or confronted by the challenges of life they actually change the situation… WOW what an influencer!
Have you been a carrot egg or coffee? To be perfectly honest we have probably all been at one stage in our lives. My desire is to be like coffee. We can have an aroma that makes a difference anywhere… and be that connecter and influencer for change….
Over these past weeks it’s been a struggle to not become the victim to our circumstances, maybe I was the carrot for a few days…. However I am not allowing this to deter me from being the coffee in our community and business..and family….
What are you today??? Carrot, Egg or Coffee
Please share…..
Make it a terrific day

Great post Kaye. I so want to be a coffee!!!!! in fact I think I am a coffee most of the time, or should I say….. eventually!!!! I usually get so cross with myself when I find myself being all carroty!!!!! (that’s when I realise I have to pull myself together and figure out a way through.
Loved your analogies Kaye. Thanks

Kaye,
I always enjoyed this part of Brian’s book. Such a simple analogy that speaks volumes about you as a person. I can honestly say I have been all three at different times in my life.
Being coffee is the one I aspire to become through awareness and thought. Thanks so much for reminding me of this,

Aloha Kaye,
I love that story! Thank you for the reminder.
We have all been all 3 haven’t we. I believe for many years I was definitely the egg, not in touch with my feelings and just thinking it was okay. Through my home business and having time to really reflect, I am happy to say I am the coffee today.
Thank you so much for sharing Kaye!

Hi Kellie thanks for your comments… yes I have been all 3 too, but believing I am truly coffee !
Val… Brian’s book is truly inspirational as he loves to share stories and analogies that people can relate to. His analogy here is really quite powerful as being coffee is really being fragrance where ever we go… Thanks again for you wonderful comments and value you bring to our community Take care Kaye
Oh Anna you are so right I can sense it in your posts that you are truly a coffee !! Thanks again really appreciate you Take care Kaye
I’ll have a double latte! I really liked the analogy you used ..fun. We do tend to blend into all types depending upon circumstances, but I believe we have the power to become more ‘caffeinated’ with practice. Thank you Kaye for the re-minder.
Your friend, Kim
Thanks Kim I think I agree I want a double latte!!! too …
