Discovering Your Uniqueness!!
Over the past few years my husband, John, and I have had the privilege of facilitating workshops where people discover through interactive learning experiences their unique giftedness, passion, abilities, personality, and how these have intertwined through life experiences to equip them to serve not only within their church community but in their families, community and business.
“Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.”( Henry David Thoreau )Discovering your uniqueness has the power to break the bonds of desperation; it is that energizing and empowering.
Every one of us has been created with gifts, abilities, passions, personality and life experiences… all these have shaped to make us who we are today. It’s empowering to recognize there is ONLY one of US in this world. We are special!!
The wrapping is not what makes a gift special. Unless we take the time to unwrap our giftedness, we never really discover what the treasure is inside!! Sometimes we may hesitate to unwrap the gift, because the wrapping is hard to get off (personal growth and self discovery are hard work!). (“I have it all together – it just looks great the way it is”)or, the beautiful ribbon looks too good to mess up and I could never tie a bow like that (“ Oh I’m too busy holding everything together to pursue my dreams”). Unaware…afraid…preoccupied with the tyranny of the urgent..too busy to take the time to see the real treasure inside… and the gift we have in our heart and hands remains powerless to change our lives and our world.
The department stores have a special gift-wrapping service at special times: it’s time for the people of power to provide an unwrapping service; getting alongside people and helping them unwrap their giftedness. No two presents are ever the same. In a cookie-cutter world, we have been created with a unique and extraordinary shape, to find our place in this world – a unique niche where only we could fit. A place to bring value to our sphere of influence- a place to unwrap and enjoy- a unique place to serve our world with all our knowledge, abilities, care, understanding, skills, abilities, support, heart, enthusiasm, energy, humor, fun, training, strengths, confidence, artistry, creativeness, optimism, warmth, inspiration, friendliness, love ,compassion, encouragement and service, gentle spirit, leadership, loyalty and so much more.
When we serve by “adding so much more in value that we take in payment”, we live lives of significance; impacting our communities, churches, businesses, teams, clubs, and tribes and the world in which we live. To walk this “road less traveled” is a powerful antidote to a life of quiet desperation.

Kaye,
It is very hard for many people to really peel away all their layers and unwrap their gift of who they are. Often times it’s a fear that keeps them living that quiet life of desperation.
The beauty is that we can step out as leaders and help others unwrap their gift and discover who they really are. Being involved in this process is truly a blessing and it can be fun to watch the butterfly emerge from the cocoon.

Kaye …you certainly have a way with words!
The quote of Thoreau’s has always been a favorite.
I love how you’ve illustrated that what we possess are gifts to be shared.
Our lives conveyed through the eyes of one who sees the essence of what is truly possible if we dare to explore our uniqueness.
Your posts always give me cause to stop and reflect!
Thanks for another great post!

I love the comment that there is only one of us so we are special. So true, we are unique, and we are part of this Universe therefore each and every one of us have value. We have the power to make are own choices to be whomever we choose to be.

Kaye,
Such elegant words to express a key point. Reminds me of the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes. We should truly look at how great we can be if we just stop hiding behind the wrapping.
Love it,
Val
