First Day, Last Day Attitude !

“Every day man crucifies himself between two thieves- the regret of yesterday and the fear of tomorrow.” Benjamin Disraeli

How often do you listen to a cd in the car, and are encouraged and challenged to move forward? This happened tonight as I was driving home. Loaded a random cd  and played one of my mentors, Brian Klemmer sharing about having a “ First Day, Last Day” attitude and it hit me between the eyes.

Maybe you may have heard this before but I really believe that it’s something worth repeating.

“DO YOU REGRET MORE OF WHAT YOU HAVE DONE OR WHAT YOU HAVEN’T DONE? and “WHAT FEARS OF REGRET ARE WE CARRYING AS WE ATTEMPT TO REACH FOR OUR DREAMS?”

“HOW DIFFERENT WOULD OUR DAY BE IF WE DIDN’T HAVE THE REGRET OF YESTERDAY AND THE FEAR OF TOMORROW ON OUR SHOULDERS?”

The challenge to consider is what is in this attitude?

FIRST DAY

Today is the first day of the rest of your life!

• Remember your first date?….  the anticipation of our first date… time spent with each other  hearts pounding heavy just to be near them and oh… that first kiss!! (Has our attitude changed over time or do we still have that spark of anticipation for the special person in our life?)

•When a new baby is born we experience the excitement of the arrival, the newness of a life with no baggage to hold them back an all the unlimited possibilities that life has to offer.

•This “first day attitude” is a day of no grudges, no regrets with our relationships, choices, or even our actions, no limitations, no past failures. Wipe your mental slate clean!  It truly is a totally refreshing energizing outlook!!

Today is the first day of the rest of your life!

LAST DAY

Today is the last day of the rest of your life!

• Challenge, if you had only 24 hours to live. You wouldn’t put off important things till tomorrow- because you’re not guaranteed another tomorrow.

• But if we assume tomorrows always come, we don’t connect or communicate, we don’t forgive those who have offended us, and we struggle to do things we commit to. We may sense no urgency to do the things that are important to our success.

• Another reason why we don’t have a “last-day attitude” is because we don’t have a vision for our future.  Afraid to BE all that we were created to BE,we get bogged down in the mundane processes of doing, and forget that we are human BEings, not human DOings!!

• When do people develop a last day attitude? Often only when their last day is literally in sight, whether financial, health, death!

• Every day when we don’t reach our dreams, is a day that we lose a measure of our life. It often happens that our dreams do not die suddenly but slowly by imperceptible degrees.

Today is the last day of the rest of your life!

Knowledge is power, and that’s good, however it’s never enough without action.  Take action NOW… write down ten things that you must do today as if this was your last day……..it may very well be.

The “First Day/Last Day Attitude” idea is a vaccine for the disease of inaction and from being paralyzed caused by fear. When we apply it, we release regret and fear, becoming empowered, excited and energized as we move forward toward our dreams.
